EU directive on the prevention of plastic waste

Ever since the EU passed a directive that aims to reduce plastic consumption from 2021, the topic of plastic and plastic substitutes has been on everyone's lips.

One thing is certain: plastic waste accounts for a significant proportion of the waste produced worldwide and is a major environmental burden as it breaks down very slowly and with great difficulty. Although there are already regulations for the correct disposal of plastic waste in Germany, this is not yet the case in many other countries.

However, some event organizers or venues are already banning plastic altogether, which poses problems for many restaurateurs.

What alternatives are there to single-use plastic?

Although drastic bans on single-use plastic (such as drinking straws) are not expected until the resolution comes into force in 2021, there are already some alternatives to single-use plastic tableware, which is increasingly coming under fire.

On the one hand, reusable products, such as our MonsterTwisters, are increasingly recommended to replace single-use plastic. Because reusable cups are taken away by customers and seen as souvenirs, they ensure that waste is avoided and bans can be circumvented.

Another alternative that is intended to replace single-use plastic one-to-one is the recyclable plastic substitute PLA.

PLA as a replacement for disposable plastic

The most important facts at a glance

What is PLA?

PLA is an abbreviation for polylactide, colloquially known as polylactic acid, and is a so-called bio-plastic. The material is obtained from naturally occurring and renewable resources, such as corn starch, and is a substitute for conventional plastic. As the material is 100% compostable, it is a natural alternative to industrially produced plastic, which is difficult to recycle.

What are the advantages and differences to conventional plastic?

Due to its plastic-like nature, products made from PLA are available in both colored and clear versions. For example, cups can be produced that are clear or printable - very similar to conventional plastic. The feel is also almost identical to "normal" plastic.

What do I need to consider?

Due to their raw materials, PLA cups and spoon straws are sensitive to heat. Most manufacturers only guarantee that the cups will not stick together or deform up to a storage temperature of around 30 degrees. Even if we have found a manufacturer whose cups last up to a storage temperature of 40 degrees, care must be taken to store them correctly and in a cool place.
